The Shadowlands

As I read through an advent devotion this morning, this passage that I’ve read probably hundreds of times, struck me in a new way (because that’s how God’s alive and active Word works!):

“The people who walk in darkness will see a great light. For those who live in a land of deep darkness, a light will shine. … For unto us a Child is born, unto us a Son is given.” (Isaiah 9:2,6)

Dark times come and go. And sometimes, they come and stay…’lands of deep darkness’, as the passage says. Believing the twisted lies of the evil one, despite knowing the root of that deception, despite knowing it to be false.

Darkness comes.

One ‘little’ thing casts a shadow. Despite a ‘sunny’ day, a shadow, by definition, brings darkness. The contrast confuses me and often traps me deeper in those shadows. I notice the bright sunny day around me, and try to convince myself it’s not really dark at all. Yet, both can be true and both often are, because shadows can be darkest on the brightest of days.

And I try and strive with all my might to get myself out of the shadow… to run away from the shadow… to wish it away… To act like I’m actually standing in the light. All the while, I forget that escaping the shadowlands doesn’t actually make the shadows disappear.

No, the only way for that to happen,
is for Light to come.”

“The people who walk in darkness will see a great light. For those who live in a land of deep darkness, a light will shine. … For unto us a Child is born, unto us a Son is given.” (Isaiah 9:2,6)

Come, dear Jesus. Come.
