Ask, seek, knock … BREATHE

“Ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and it will be opened to you. For everyone who asks receives, and the one who seeks finds, and to the one who knocks it will be opened. (Matthew 7:7, 8 ESV)

Ask, seek, knock. They seem simple. They are. As simple as inhaling.

We were created with the need to breathe, we were created with the ability to breathe, and we were created in an environment with air all around us to breathe. However, if we never breathe in, we will die.

The same is true in our spiritual lives. We were created with the need for God. His spirit gives us the ability to breathe him in. He places us in an environment in which, despite all the other things around us competing for our attention, He really is everywhere. But so often we just stand here holding our breath as if we’ve got something to prove… How long we can go it on our own? But without breathing in God, we will die. Oh, we might last a little longer than a minute or two as with actual physical breath, but we will slowly die. Only God can give us the life-giving air we need and when we breathe that in, life lasts forever… Abundant life.

Ask and it shall be given.
Seek and you shall find.
Knock and the door shall be opened to you.

Breathe and you will have life.

New thoughts! This is just how my brain works but I think it’s cool:

If you hold your breath for a really long time you really wouldn’t die right away because God has made our bodies in such a way that if we hold our breath too long we pass out and then our bodies automatically start us breathing again. I find this an extremely comforting analogy as I think about the times when I do stand here in life trying to do things on my own as if I have to prove my worth or value or… something to God or others. Eventually, when “I just can’t do it anymore!!!” God says, “that’s okay; you don’t have to” and will fill the ‘lungs’ of my heart back up with his grace and peace. When I finally shut down He’s able to give me what we both knew I needed the entire time I was standing there being stubborn.

  1. Pretty cool thoughts about holding your breath/not breathing! I always think it’s kind of funny when people use breathing analogies and say, “You don’t ever think about it,” or, “It’s so simple and doesn’t require any work.” I just smile and nod, knowing that I’m completely ruining their point. =)

  2. Thanks for sharing, my beautiful friend! “Ask, Seek, Knock” has been a recurring theme in my life recently and it’s neat to hear thoughts on it from a different perspective. Love you! 🙂
